This work is the result of collaboration between the English, French, Channel Isles and Belgian laboratories which are involved in a study of the English Channel. Its subject is the activities of fleets and their interactions, and it complements other work on the biogeographical identification of Channel fish and shellfish stocks (published), and on modelling the fleets' interactions as they exploit theresources (in preparation). The concept of a metier is defined as being the use of one fishing gear to catch one or several species targeted during a particular season in a given area. On this basis, 74 metiers were identified during 1989-90. For each metier we give a brief description of the catching gear, the target species and most usual by-catch, the... |

The annual activity calendars of the 2,000 Breton fishing boats registered in the national POP file (with the exception of seafaring ships: 35 ocean-going tuna boats and 2 ships from Saint-Malo) were reconstituted for the year 1994 through surveys of the owners of these ships. Resorting to this method was necessary to overcome the weak statistical coverage of coastal fishing activity that is practiced within the 12 miles of territorial waters. This collection of information made it possible to build a database that contains, for each boat, the various trades practiced during the year 1994 and, if applicable, the periods of inactivity. By "trade", we mean the putting to use of a fishing vessel in order to catch one or several target species, in a given... |

Regular flights over the Bay of Biscay by the French Customs Air Service, have enabled us to record more precisely, from 1989 to 1995, the geographical locations of French and other European Community (EU) fishing boats. Data showed three main 'metiers' within the Bay of Biscay fishing fleet: French and Spanish bottom trawlers (61 %), French gill-netters and Spanish longliners: More than 80 % of gill-netters worked inside the territorial sea (12 nautical miles) and 60 % of them worked south of Noirmoutier (47 degrees N). Longliners moved according to the seasons, from the edge of the continental shelf to the 50-100 m sounding lines. Since they work at night, only few pelagic trawlers have been recorded (records being made in daylight). The potters, liners... |

This document is the 2001 activity report delivered by IFREMER, CEDEM (IUEM, UBO) and ENSA of Rennes for a co-financed study by the Brittany region within the framework of the XII CPER. This report is composed of: - an IFREMER study on the historical evolution of the Breton fleet created using data from the "halieutic observations system" (SIH) and surveys on the economic activity of fishing ships. The study is most interested in the Mor Braz and the Sea of Iroise sites. - an analysis by CEDEM of the legal and economic aspects of fishing along the coastal strip through two case studies: A seasonal break from bottom trawling and the diversification of professional fishing towards tourist and recreational economic activities. - a study by ENSA of Rennes on... |

This summary of the French fisheries of the North Sea/English Channel/Atlantic for the year 2000 is done in the context of the programme "Halieutic Information Systems" that has as its goal the creation of a permanent and operational observatory of fishing. It brings together several types of data: statistical data of administrative origin, data from the IFREMER pollsters network, economic data and data acquired during sea campaigns. This first annual summary of French fisheries, meant for all actors in the fishing industry (from research to professionals and managers) and the general public, is limited to the Atlantic coast. The first part of this document contains an overall description of the English Channel Atlantic fleet, that is, all trades included.... |

The document synthesizes the data collected in 2002 and 2003 as part of the Fisheries monitoring system of Ifremer. It updates the description of the status in 2000 of the French fishing fleets operating in the North Sea, Channel and Atlantic (produced in 2002). The document is made of a series of leaflets. The first leaflet provides a global description of the overall population of fishing vessels. Information provided includes vessel and crew characteristics, spatial distribution of fishing activity and catch, and gears used. A description of fleets (sub-groups of vessels using the same gear combinations) is also provided at both national and regional levels. The following leaflets provide a detailed description of the fishing activity and economic... |
